New Project: „Towards Convergence - Strengthening Environmental Policy and Law in the Southern Caucasus“ InWEnt - Capacity Building International and Adelphi Research started a new project on strengthening environmental policy and law in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Starting in 2005, two training courses per year will be conducted on selected priority areas in environmental policy and law in order to strengthen the regulatory capacity and overall administrative capacity of the respective environment ministries and subordinate bodies in the Southern Caucasus states. These training programmes will be subsequently developed with the partner institutions in each of the three Caucasus states and are to be embedded in a broader assistance framework to help these countries comply with major environmental legislation of the European Union (EU). Mapping security-related environmental risks in the Southern Caucasus After Central Asia and South Eastern Europe, UNEP, UNDP and OSCE have now launched their Environment and Security Initiative in the Southern Caucasus region. Adelphi Research is supporting the Initiative in the discussion and interactive mapping exercise of security-related environmental risks held among multiple stakeholders during two-day workshops in May 2004 in Yerevan, Tbilisi and Baku. The outcome of this assessment will be a report and maps indicating areas where environment and security concerns accumulate and a work programme to address the main issues and ‘hotspots’. Adelphi applies for seed award In cooperation with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), Adelphi submitted an application with the “Seed Initiative“ (http://www.seedawards.org) in the area of technology cooperation. The measure entitled “Joint initiative to clean Mohammedia“ is orientated toward the development of an environmental technology center financed by local companies and organizations. With the goal of supporting business activities for environment and development, the seed award is a joint initiative of organizations, including UNEP, UNDP and IUCN, and is financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. Technical Assistance Advisory Service Environmental Management GTZ ASEM, India Development in India is marked by increasing urbanisation and industrialisation, while environmental condtions are worsening dramatically. New Report on Illegal logging in Indonesia Our partner company Adelphi Research and InWEnt - Capacity Building International has published a report on the linkages between illegal logging, state failure, resource conflict, and the role of the business sector in Indonesia. The study written by Esther Schroeder-Wildberg und Alexander Carius of Adelphi Research outlines the magnitude of illegal logging and illegal trade and its social, economic and political impacts on already marginalized communities. Against this background necessary steps towards sustainable forest management, conflict prevention and good governance by public and private authorities, international institutions and civil society are being discussed in order to reduce the impacts of illegal logging and illegal trade in timber products and address emerging conflicts. New project IMAC will tackle coastal zone management in Northern Lebanon In a new project, Adelphi together with the University of Balamand, Lebanon and partners from Italy and Greece, endeavors to improve management of coastal zones in Northern Lebanon. The project IMAC will launch a process of integrated coastal zone management, which is initiated and endorsed by all stakeholders. Activities will include awareness raising, capacity building, assessment of existing frameworks, strategy development and implementation of pilot activities. Visit the ECC-Exhibition in the Federal Environmental Agency in Dessau The next stop of the exhibition "Environment, Conflict and Cooperation" is the German Federal Environmental Agency in Dessau (18. October and 27. August). The exhibition visualizes the dramatic impacts of global environmental change. New project: Product description „Technology Cooperation for Developing countries and countries in transition“ for the GTZ “Technology Cooperation“ is an issue of increasing importance in bilateral development cooperation. The German corporation for international cooperation (Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit, GTZ) implemented a range of activities in this field during the last years. With the aim to make GTZ’s practical experiences available in the framework of the corporation’s knowledge management, Adelphi Consult has been asked to develop a definition and precise description of GTZ’s product „Technology Cooperation for Developing countries and countries in transition“. New Publication: Environmental Cooperation as an Instrument of Crisis Prevention "Environmental Cooperation as an Instrument of Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding: Conditions for Success and Constraints" is the name of a study published by the Berlin based think tank Adelphi Consult and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The objective of the study by Alexander Carius is to identify the conditions under which environmental cooperation can facilitate conflict transformation and peacebuilding. It also examines which specific forms of negotiation or stakeholder constellations have so far proved particularly successful. The study is primarily an attempt to systematize the role of environmental cooperation with regard to conflict prevention and peacebuilding and to define its scope more clearly. Development of management options and activities for the new environmental programme of GTZ in India. Adelphi Consult has been entrusted with the challenging task to identify activities and devise recommendations of ongoing projects to be continued within the ASEM (Advisory Services in Environmental Management) context. ASEM is a joint programme of the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) focusing on urban and industrial environmental management. In the framework of the new environmental programme of the GTZ in India, several activities of ongoing projects will be transferred to the new programme ASEM. Especially the components “Environmental Planning” and “Waste Management” will be followed up and focussed within the new programme concept of the GTZ in India. |
New Project: Pan-European Environmental Politics - Adaptation of EU-law in Georgia In order to prepare Georgia for the adoption of EU law Adelphi Consult will develop and carry out a series of education and training measures for specialists and executives in the environmental administration in the States of the western Caucasus and Central Asia. New project: National Consultation on Sustainable Production and Consumption Companies are important drivers for sustainable production and consumption. Their success depends on innovative stakeholder configurations to promote sustainable products on the market. Innovative and sustainable products require innovative partnerships between private sector, state authorities, environmental and consumer protection NGOs, media and foundations. The national stakeholder dialogue on sustainable production and consumption offers a unique opportunity to bring these stakeholders together. Background study: Riverbasin-Cooperation and management in shared river basins: The new Water Cooperation Facility On the World Forum on Water in March 21st 2003 in Kyoto, the new Water Cooperation Facility (WCF) was introduced as a common project of the UNESCO, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the World Water Council and the University Partnership for Transboundary Waters. In the long run, the WCF shall open new possibilities to States and NGO's to use the whole amplitude of consultation possibilities for transboundary Water-Cooperation via a global facility. Basic Services for the World's Poor People - World Development Report 2004: an analysis Adelphi Consult will, on behalf of Inwent, analyze and comment on the World Development Report. The WDR of 2004 deals with the problems of making services work for poor people and offers recommendation for policymakers, donors, and citizens on improving the delivery of basic services. New Project: Technology Transfer in the Waste Industry The Federal Environmental Agency has commissioned Adelphi Consult to support the profiling process of the newly established Platform for Technology Transfer (Waste Management). Project Assessment on Capacity Building for Geothermal Energy in Rwanda The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) has commissioned Adelphi Consult to assess a project proposal on geothermal capacity building in Rwanda. Adelphi Consult has been tasked to review the feasibility and developmental relevance of the project proposal submitted by the Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure (MINIFRA). Evaluation of the Export Helpdesk for Developing Countries Adelphi Consult has been commissioned by the Directorate General for Trade (DG Trade) to evaluate the Export Helpdesk for Developing Countries (http://export-help.cec.eu.int). The free online service offers comprehensive information on import and trade issues for exporters from developing countries planning to access the EU market. The focus of the investigation is on assessing reliability, completeness and user-friendliness of the Export Helpdesk, and on evaluating its impact as well as awareness of its availability. Strategy of Internationalisation of Partslife Partslife, the disposal system on the automotive parts sector is based in Langen (Hessen) and was founded in 1995 by manufacturers of automotive parts and trade cooperations. Adelphi Consult supports Partslife in their systematic development of partnership “Partslife Europe” until the middle of 2007 in three additional European countries with short analyses concerning the state of implementation of the EU Directives End of Life Vehicles Directive (ELV), Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (WEEE) and the regulation on packaging. SME Environment Promotion Programme One of the main challenges for the Egyptian development is the improvement of income and employment opportunities especially among the poorer population. In December 2005 the SME Promotion Programme started, conducted by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry. The programme activities are financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Addressing the Interlinkages between Natural Resource Management and Conflict in the European Commissions’ External Relations Natural resources and conflicts are interlinked in a variety of ways. On the one hand, conflicts might arise over natural resources, while on the other hand the cooperative and sustainable management of them may act as confidence building measure contributing to peacebuilding. “Business as unusual” - Seed Initiative Awards Channel 2006 to 2008 Adelphi Consult has been selected to support the Seed Awards Channel 2006 to 2008. Sparked off in 2001 by preparations to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, the Seed Initiative highlights the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable solutions to societal problems. ISO/TC 207 Conference Walter Kahlenborn was delegated by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment to participate in this year’s plenary meeting of ISO/TC 207 from 28. August to 5. September in Buenos Aires. In the framework of the so-called super work shop, he held a presentation in front of 500 international experts on the diverse environmental management approaches beyond ISO 14001 and EMAS. Adelphi project in Morocco nominated finalist for ‘seed award’ The tender for the „Seed Award“ in the area of technology cooperation, filed by Adelphi Consult in cooperation with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), has made it to the final round of selection from more than 260 applicants. The measure entitled “Joint initiative to clean Mohammedia“ aims to develop an environmental technology centre. The chosen approach involves 14 partner organisations, comprising companies, their representatives, NGOs, local and international research institutions as well as local and national public authorities from different sectors. Key factor for success compared to other technology transfer centre concepts is the local approach, which enables a high degree of identification and ownership. The broad spectrum of participants creates important synergy effects and the pooling of human and financial resources among stakeholders. With the goal of supporting business activities for environment and development, the seed award is a joint initiative of various organisations, including UNEP, UNDP and IUCN, and is financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. Klaus Töpfer introduces UNEP-Report on Environment, Conflict, and Cooperation UNEP executive director Klaus Töpfer has introduced a new study on "Understanding Environment, Conflict, and Cooperation" on October 6th at the Woodrow Wilson Center . In this study 20 leading international scholars identify deficits and the pieces missing from the environment-conflict puzzle and examine the gaps in research, institutional responses, and early warning systems. Strengthening Environmental Policy in Georgia In order to assist Georgia in the process of strengthening its environmental administration, our partner Adelphi Research and InWent, Capacity Building International conduct a training course for senior officials and executives of the Georgian public administration on legal harmonisation in the fields of air pollution control and waste water management. The training course is scheduled for November 7-15, 2004 in Berlin. The training consists of presentations, expert dialogues, excursions and role-plays. Evaluation and Assessment of capacity building approaches in environmental policy making in the context of the GTZ sector project and GEF and UNFCCC activities. On behalf of the German Institute for Development Policy Adelphi Consult undertakes a study that assesses different approaches to capacity building within the framework of the ongoing evaluation of capacity building measures initiated under the auspices of the UNFCCC. Technical Assistance Advisory Service Environmental Management GTZ ASEM, India Development in India is marked by increasing urbanisation and industrialisation, while environmental condtions are worsening dramatically. Against this background, GTZ in cooperation with its Indian partner, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), has developed and is implementing the Advisory Service on Environmental Management (ASEM). New publication in the export development sector by Jörg Janischewski "Exporting to Germany" is the title of the English language principle idea of the German Chamber of Trade and Commerce (DIHK) and the Federal Association of German Wholesale and Foreign Trade. The publication provides extensive information on distribution routes, newly founded companies, employer-employee relations, standards, intellectual property, trade fairs, customs regulations, business practices and market research. Fact sheet on renewable energy technologies To support the IHK GmbH, a partner in the SAVE project "Integrated Energy Plan of Frýdlant Microregion", Adelphi Consult developed fact sheets on different renewable energy technologies. The technologies are suitable for small to medium sized projects and can be applied in the Frýdlant microregion or similar regions in the Czech Republic, e.g. wind turbines, small capacity chip wood or straw-fired boilers, small-scale biomass-based CHP systems, technologies for production of Biodiesel and plants for the production of biogas. The primary aim of the SAVE project in Frýdlant microregion is to promote and enhance the utilization of renewable energy resources, to reduce energy related pollution and stimulate employment at the regional level. New project in India: Ecoprofit Gurgaon, India 2003 to 2005 Our partner company Adelphi Research jointly with his partners, Austria Recycling (AREC) and Gurgaon Industrial Association (GIA), India has been granted with a new project on technical assistance and capacity building of selected Indian industries. The purpose of the new initiative under the Technology Partnership tool of the Asia Pro-Eco Programme of EuropeAid is to enable technology transfer among European and Indian Partners and to carry out training and consulting activities on the basis of the concept of Integrated Environmental Production and Service Policy and Cleaner Production Practices. New project in the Mediterranean Region: Efficient Management of Wastewater, its treatment and reuse in the Mediterranean Countries Our partner company Adelphi Research started - together with InWEnt, Technical University Hamburg-Harburg, Germany and ENEA, Italy - to implement a four year project on efficient waste water management in the Mediterranean Region under the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership of the EC . The project providing technical assistance in the area of treatment and reuse of wastewater will be undertaken with four local MEDA partners from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Turkey. Key areas of activities will be the performance of country studies, the development of regional policy and technical guidelines, the execution of pilot and demonstration plants and the implementation of regional and local training programmes in the area of efficient waste water management. Strategies of internationalisation for Enterprises Many European Companies faced a changed economic environment in the last years. More transparency and higher transaction and turnaround speed in the market place resulted into pressure On the other side opportunities for new markets arose. To be prepared for long term presence on international markets, especially SMEs require practice oriented advise and training. To sustain the entry of European companies into international markets, Adelphi Consult has developed with its partners advisory services on internationalisation for SMEs. Presently Adelphi Consult provides advice to two companies originating out of the health care and environmental sector. Adelphi Consult supports the companies in implementing management and operational structures for international business approaches. The coaching of staff and the development of internal tools and instruments for being prepared for international markets are being developed in six topic workshops. more |
Project Progress Review for the „International Centre for Environmental Technologies (CITET)“, Tunisia - new project for the GTZ CITET, based in tunis, is an international technology transfer Centre focussing on environmental technologies. The main purpose of this Centre is to strengthen the capacities in the field of environmental protection as well as to promote sustainable management of resources. This purpose is achieved inter alia by services like the organisation of training programmes in the field of environmental technologies and management. The Centre is being supported by the GTZ ever since February 2000. Adelphi Consult has been requested to conduct a Project Progress Review, the results of which being utilised to reorient the project conception and to draw a new project proposal for a possible extension period after the end of the current funding period in August 2004. Environmental impacts of free trade agreements in Maorocco - analysis and policy dialogue for GTZ Morocco A new project commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) examines the potential negative and positive environmental impacts of the implementation of various free trade agreements in Morocco. It takes into account the general commitments and current negotiations in the WTO. In addition, it examines the currently negotiated bilateral free trade agreement between Morocco and the US and the negotiations in the context of the Morocco-EU association agreement. The potential environmental impacts related to the free trade agreements examined will be discussed with government representatives and during regional conferences in Rabat, Marrakech and Tunis. Success Stories in Environmental Technology Transfer – New Markets for German High Technology Mikael Henzler and Jörg Janischewski are authors of two chapters of a new publication by the German Publisher „Deutscher Wirtschaftsdienst”. The book analyses the opportunities and chances for German Technology Providers, especially SME´s in foreign markets. Well known authors from Germany contributed to the book with their experience in the field of environmental technology transfer in foreign markets. The book offers a broad spectrum of methods and tools ranging from company checks, financing strategies, marketing strategies to the selection of partners in foreign markets. The book provides the basis for setting up an independent strategy for SME´s entering foreign markets. |
